All of our herbal extracts use organically grown and/or ethically wildcrafted herbs and certified organic food-grade ethanol diluted to specific potencies in filtered and/or distilled rainwater, unless otherwise specified.

Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) is a perennial member of the pea (Fabaceae) family and one of the classic restorative herbs of the Western herbal tradition. Cultivated throughout Europe and naturalised across much of the world, its crimson flower heads gained particular prominence as a remedy for chronic skin conditions, with preparations of red clover widely prescribed wherever sluggish elimination and constitutional depletion were thought to underlie persistent ill health. Nineteenth-century Eclectic physicians considered red clover one of the foremost alterative/depurative herbs, prescribing it where chronic skin eruptions, glandular enlargement and constitutional weakness suggested impaired nutrition and elimination.

Rich in isoflavones, flavonoids, coumarins, polysaccharides, minerals and other phenolic compounds, red clover combines a mild nutritive quality with a gentle affinity for the lymphatic, respiratory and integumentary systems. Modern research has explored its phytoestrogenic constituents and their influence on endocrine physiology, whilst traditional Western herbal medicine has regarded the herb as a valuable restorative supporting healthy metabolism, tissue repair and the elimination of accumulated metabolic wastes.

Traditionally regarded as neutral with a slightly cooling and moistening nature, red clover has been thought to support healthy skin through its longstanding reputation as a depurative or “blood-cleansing” herb. It has also been valued for encouraging efficient lymphatic and urinary elimination, maintaining healthy connective tissues and supporting recovery from chronic inflammatory states. Its soothing demulcent and respiratory relaxant properties have further contributed to a traditional use in dry, irritating coughs, bronchial tension and persistent catarrhal conditions, whilst its nourishing qualities have made red clover a useful constitutional tonic during periods of convalescence and chronic debility.
