Mullein leaf (Verbascum thapsus & V. olympicum), a member of the Scrophulariaceae family, has long been venerated for being a soothing restorative herb to the respiratory system in particular. Traditionally, mullein was used to treat ailments of the lungs, from common colds to chronic respiratory ailments, and as a gentle herb to promote mucosal healing and clear phlegm.   • Antipathy in Galenic medicine involved using treatments that possessed qualities opposite to those of the humor associated with the disease. For example, if a patient had a condition characterised by excessive heat, such as a fever, Galenic physicians would prescribe remedies with cooling or cold properties to counterbalance the excess heat. Similarly, if a condition was considered excessively moist, treatments with drying or astringent properties would be employed.
