Marshmallow (Althea officinalis) root… brief information on herb (traditional & modern)…
Made by cold-maceration in water overnight, then tinctured
softens & breaks up hard tissue (water follows salt); "most diuretic & anti-inflammatory of the mucilages & the most mucilaginous of diuretics" - soothes kidneys & bladder whilst increasing diuresis (Wood, 2008)
HOLISTIC: moistens the stomach and intestines, and reduces gastric secretions; moistens the lungs and relieves coughing; clears damp-heat; reduces inflammation, infection and putrefaction, and stops discharge; harmonises urination and reduces irritation; stimulates immunity; moistens and cools the skin, softens boils and draws pus; promotes lactation (Holmes, 2007).
used interchangeably (mostly) w/ aerial parts:
[broad, general, nonspecific applicability as a palliative or curative in almost any hot, dry, hard conditions - palliative bowel disease (e.g. Crohn's, colitis), dysentery, chemotherapy; dried out people with no thirst & those w/ excessive thirst & copius urination; red & dry tongue w/ glazed, shiny surface, sometimes w/ horizontal breaks or cuts in the glaze (indicates dryness, hardening & heat (Wood, 2008); dried out MM in smokers, hardening of the arteries, hypertension w/ water retention; dry cough in the URT, congestion, catarrh, hardened mucous, bronchitis, asthma, whooping cough, emphysema; GERD, overacidity, ulcers, low digestive enzyme production (leaves) w/ gastric acidity (leaves & roots), constipation; painful scatty urination, cystitis, strangury, haematuria, gravel; arthritis in knees w/ dry mucosa & tongue signs; diabetes (Wood, 2008)
TOPICAL: haemorrhoids, lactation (sore nipples), sores, burns, boils, abscesses & inflamed skin (skin - red, dry w/ white powder exfoliating), varicose veins, ulcers]
chemotherapy, mucous colitis, gastric acidity; [stomach & large intestine dryness] abdominal distension w/ lumpy sensation, hunger without eating, constipation, hard dry stool, gastritis, peptic ulcer, hiatus hernia
TOPICAL (Galen): prevents formation of pus, lubrication of knees & joints, stiff muscles, dry eczema, psoriasis
safe to use in children & elders; may delay the absorption of other drugs
E.g., Catnip (Nepeta cataria) belongs to the mint (Lamiaceae) family therefore possesses significant volatile oil content, incl. nepetelactone (similar to valepotriates of Valerian), which is thought to be its main constituent responsible for the altered behaviour in cats, but also a major contributor to its effects in humans.
Considered a relatively pungent and bitter herb with cooling and dry qualities, aiding to its stimulating and relaxing actions on the body tissues, especially those of the gastrointestinal and nervous systems. By these actions, catnip has the ability to dispel wind(tensive)-heat and damp(stagnant)-heat manifesting as congestion, headaches, internalised stress and colic to name a few (Holmes, 2007). Catnip is particularly useful in infants and children, especially in nervous and fretful infant or children acting out as over reactive, ‘closed down’/internalising or even mean-spirited (Wood, 2008).
Catnip poses useful in eruptive fevers in both adults and children, working by relieving tension and opening the pores of the skin to allow the heat to escape. In adults it’s also helpful in incidences of hiatal hernia, menstrual headache, cramps and colic.
