Elder flower (Sambucus canadensis & S. nigra) of the elder tree, belonging to the Adoxaceae family, is a classic antiviral plant medicine traditionally used to alleviate cold & flu symptoms in all ages.

Traditionally, elder flower is well revered for its well-rounded applications when the body needs support in any cases of hot-swampy dis-ease states. It is particularly useful when there are conditions of toxic heat such as swellings and infections with discharge both internally and externally, especially when involving the respiratory, skin and immune systems.

Elder flower helps to disperse (wind/toxic) heat, phlegm, fever & inflammation. Due to elder flower's energetics (see below), these actions are firstly facilitated through helping to cool the body's exterior via sweating and expectoration of mucous; then secondly via drying out and draining fluid build up within the tissues.   • Antipathy in Galenic medicine involved using treatments that possessed qualities opposite to those of the humor associated with the disease. For example, if a patient had a condition characterised by excessive heat, such as a fever, Galenic physicians would prescribe remedies with cooling or cold properties to counterbalance the excess heat. Similarly, if a condition was considered excessively moist, treatments with drying or astringent properties would be employed.

Recommended dose:

10 - 30 drops up to 3x per day or advised by your Herbalist/Spagyrist. Apply under tongue for rapid absorption. Alternatively, add to 5mL of water. Shake well before use.
