Tobacco (Virginia Smoking) Seeds
Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum)
Description:
Virginia Smoking Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), an annual member of the Solanaecea (Nightshade) family, is one of the most historically significant cultivated plants of the New World. Indigenous to the Americas, N. tabacum was domesticated long before European contact and held deep ceremonial, agricultural, and ecological importance among many Indigenous cultures.
This variety is a classic Virginia-type tobacco, known for its adaptability and ease of cultivation, particularly in regions with cooler summers or shorter growing seasons. Plants grow upright with broad, thin leaves and soft pink tubular flowers, reaching heights of up to 1.5 metres under favourable conditions.
NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION: This plant is offered for botanical, educational, and natural garden-use purposes only. Avoid ingestion and contact with sap. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
CAUTION: Avoid contact with the sap or ingesting any part of the plant. Keep it away from children and pets.
Growing Conditions:
Climate: adaptable to a wide range of climates; performs well in temperate regions and tolerates mild frosts.
Position: full sun to partial shade; best growth occurs with at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Soil: various soil types incl. sandy, loamy, or clay soils but prefers nitrogen-rich, well-draining soil; ideal soil pH should be slightly alkaline neutral (around 6.5 to 8.0).
Water: low - moderate water needs; relatively drought-tolerant once established; mulching is ideal to protect any exposed roots overtime.
Spacing: space the plants approximately 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60cm) apart to support healthy leaf development.
Propagation: sow the seeds directly onto the garden bed or seed flats/pots surface in the spring or indoors 6 - 8 weeks before last expected frosts. Tamp securely onto the soil surface (light-dependent germinator). Germination should occur within 10 - 14 days. Transplant or thin once seedlings are established
~150 seeds per pack
