Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
Description:
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a low-growing, evergreen perennial of the Lamiaceae (Mint) family, native to the Mediterranean basin and long naturalised throughout temperate regions of the world. Thyme is a drought-tolerant, pollinator-friendly perennial that thrives in lean soils where many softer herbs struggle. Once established, Thyme requires little intervention and rewards the grower with year-round greenery and reliable seasonal bloom.
Unlike creeping wild thyme species, T. vulgaris develops as a compact, upright subshrub with slender stems, small, oval leaves rich in essential oils and and delicate pink to lavender flowers that bloom generously from midsummer onward. When brushed or warmed by the sun, the foliage releases its characteristic warm, resinous, slightly camphoraceous scent.
Growing Conditions:
Climate: cool-temperate but adaptable to a variety of climates.
Position: full sun exposure with at least 6 to 8 hours a day for optimal growth.
Soil: well-draining, rocky and/or sandy soil; ideal soil pH should be slightly alkaline to neutral, ranging from 7.0 to 8.0.
Water: low water needs; water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings; drought-tolerant.
Spacing: space the plants approximately 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30cm) apart.
Propagation: sow the seeds directly on the surface of soil and tamp securely in seed flats/pots or garden bed in spring or autumn. Keep moist until germination; alternatively, take stem cuttings in spring or early summer and root them in well-draining soil or water.
Harvest: harvest leaves as needed throughout the growing season; can be harvested at any time, but they are most flavourful just before the plant flowers. To encourage bushier growth, avoid removing more than one-third of the foliage at a time, especially the deadwood.
