Snapdragon (Antirrhinum spp.), mixed

Description:

Snapdragon is a popular annual (or short-lived perennial) flowering plant with various species and cultivars, known for their vibrant and showy blooms. These plants typically have erect stems and lance-shaped leaves, with long-lasting and unique blooms that resemble the face of a dragon or a mask. They present in wide range of colours, including pink, red, yellow, orange, and white. The blooms have a characteristic "snapping" mechanism where the flowers can be gently squeezed to open and release the seeds when ripe.

Growing Conditions:

  • Climate: cool-temperate.

  • Position: full sun to partial shade; generally preferring exposure to at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Soil: well-draining, fertile soil; ideal soil should have a slightly acidic to neutral pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.0.

  • Water: mild to moderate water needs; water the plants deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry.

  • Spacing: space the plants approximately 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30cm) apart.

  • Propagation: sow the seeds directly onto soil surface or lightly cover and tamp securely (light-dependent germinators). Sow them indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost date or directly into the garden bed after the danger of frost has passed.

  • Harvest: Snapdragons produce long-lasting cut flowers. Harvest the flowers by cutting the stems with clean, sharp pruners or scissors. Cut the stems just above a leaf node or lateral shoot. Choose flowers that have just started to open, as they will continue to open and provide a longer vase life.

Deadheading: To encourage continued blooming, regularly remove faded or spent flowers. This process, known as deadheading, directs the plant's energy towards producing new blooms.
