Antipathy in Galenic medicine involved using treatments that possessed qualities opposite to those of the humor associated with the disease. For example, if a patient had a condition characterised by excessive heat, such as a fever, Galenic physicians would prescribe remedies with cooling or cold properties to counterbalance the excess heat. Similarly, if a condition was considered excessively moist, treatments with drying or astringent properties would be employed.
Applications:
Castor oil pack: Soak flannel in warmed oil, place on affected area & apply dry heat source (e.g., heating pad or hot water bottle) for up to 1 hour. Make sure to wash the area afterwards with a baking soda solution to remove the remaining oil and toxins pulled from the skin.
