Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), a member of the Astaraceae family, is a highly revered medicinal herb by both humans, companion plants and hover-flies alike. In the ‘wild’, yarrow can be found growing along roadsides, in ditches and geographical boundaries, signifying some of yarrow’s strongest virtues of protection and boundary-setting. Yarrow is also a great protector of its neighbours in the garden, by attracting beneficial insects to ward off pests and acting like a living mulch, protecting the soil and its inhabitants from weather exposure and degradation.

Achillea is derived from the Greek demigod, physician and warrior, Achilles. The legend tells of his mother, a sea nymph named Thetis, holding Achilles by the ankle and dipping him in yarrow tea as a baby, with the intention to protect him and provide him with immortality. During the Trojan war, Achilles was said to use yarrow to heal the battle wounds of his fellow army men, helping to stop bleeding and heal the vascular tissue (which is still a major method of use today). Unfortunately Achilles met his demise during this war by being struck through the ankle (Achilles heel) with an arrow, in the spot where his mother’s hand kept the yarrow tea from blessing his skin.

WHAT ARE FLOWER ESSENCES?

Flower essences are considered to be a form of vibrational medicine containing the energetic imprint of a flower within the matrix of water, as opposed to herbal extracts which contain active constituents that often have a potent effect on the physical body.
