Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), a member of the figwort (Scrophulariaceae) family, is one the most well-recognised cottage garden flowers and is often associated with witchcraft or, from a more practical lense, the attraction beneficial insects. Foxglove is also well known for the cardiac glycoside and pharmaceutical derivative, digoxin, used in cases of heart failure for its ability to increase the force of heart muscle contraction simultaneously with decreased oxygen consumption. It is for this reason, foxglove is considered to be a formidable plant in the garden despite their beauty, for if consumed by an unknowing, inexperienced or over-confident person, death may indeed follow.
Foxglove is a magical plant long associated with faeries, making homes in their spotted bells. Foxglove is often called ‘lusmore’ in Ireland, or ‘the Great Herb’ (english translation), and also fairy-cap – a retreat in which the merry little elves are said to hide themselves when a human foot approaches to disturb their dances.
The bending of the plant's tall stalk is believed to symbolise the presence of supernatural beings, to which the flower is making its curtsy. In the Irish legend of Knockgrafton, the hero, a poor hunchback man named Lusmore, was believed to have a great knowledge of herbs and charms. He always wears a sprig of the fairy-cap in his little straw hat, and hence foxglove has the nickname Lusmore. The legend as I know it tells of Lusmore being welcomed and blessed by the Fae, removing his hunchback in exchange for his musical performance.
